Victoria's Secret Hair

I live in the south, where it's humid. And during monsoon season (happening now btw) it almost isn't worth it to do your hair. Or maybe that's my laziness talking.

just a typical day
from this weekend!

So instead of doing more research into UK weather and life and whatever else I should be learning, I've decided to walk the path of denial and spend countless hours on youtube looking at the best way to curl my hair a la vicky's secret.

I can deal with the advice on the Total Beauty website (Hair Secrets of the Victoria's Secret Models), because when I kinda feel like actually doing my hair, I do it like that. Hairspray + curling iron + more hairspray.

Although, I don't pin my hair free style like that, I cheat and use velcro rollers.

The Danish police...are kinda awesome

Oh my gosh, I didn't mean to stay away for sooo long! I've been trying to pack my life into a suitcase...and find actual winter clothes.

It's just that I keep getting distracted, by things I don't need.

And I had to buy a laptop/netbook computer thing for class. I have learned that my personal preference when picking out electronics is: "is it pretty?". The sales men love me.

Since, I'm still packing (I mean, how many jeans do I need anyways?), I'll just post a photo of a Danish police officer being fun.

Can we even talk about the fact that they (as in the Danish police) have a facebook page!

Olympic Nail Art

The Olympic athletes are sporting some awesome nail art for their home countries. I'm totally jealous as I'm far too lazy to attempt some of these intricate designs. Although I could probably get the red, white or blue thing going.

The Guardian Newspaper has a Pinterest board dedicated to Olympic athletes patriotic nail art, plus some additional patriotic/Olympic nail art. (Link:  Olympic Nail Art)

Inspirationail has a Pinterest board dedicated to the 2012 Olympic Games-Nails as well (Link: Olympic Nails)

The post is ridiculously picture heavy. And mostly American athletes because that's where I'm from but there are other countries in the links, promise! I kinda went overboard with the pics and the links to even MORE pictures. Sorry!

Have you ever wondered what the Olympic Rings meant?

Even though NBC is doing the broadcasting of the Olympics in America in a delayed and edited and...incredibly obnoxious fashion (what--you don't yell at Ryan Seacrest?) the basic Olympic stuff gets through. Sort of. If you can wait up for it. And not yell at the inane questions they ask the Olympians. I mean seriously, "How does it feel to win a gold medal?" What are they going to say "Oh, absolutely awful, won't do it again. Can't stand it, darling". Ugh!

There's all sorts of rules about the Olympics, logos, and anything that could link to them. Like, you can't sell Olympic themed merchandise without permission. They're HEAVILY trademarked. Strange but it makes perfect sense.

The Olympic Rings, the five interlocking rings, have a fun back story which I didn't know before I was browsing the internet to avoid thinking about buying a coat (because it's going to cold this winter!). I'm damn good at procrastination.

Olympic Rings via Wikipedia
There are five colors and then the white background that represents all the colors of the countries that competed in the Olympics in 1912. The design was created by Pierre de Coubertin, who also is the founder of the International Olympic Committee and in theory the founder of the modern Olympic games, and the owner of a spectacular mustache.

Isn't that fun to know. Don't you wish the NBC people talked about stuff like that? Or maybe they do. But I'm asleep by the time that happens.

Paralympic Symbol via Wikipedia
The Paralympics are also happening this summer and this is their flag/symbol. Which is new, from 2003. It's about unity and motion and the colors are the most common flag colors in the world.

Lab 42 made this infographic based on a poll they did from 500 social media users. I only feel bad for not picking up on what an Olympiad was, but I knew everything else question wise. Go me!

the Mayo Clinic goes to Mount Everest

Let's talk about camping...or hiking. Or anything out-doorsy.

It's torture.

Which is probably why I'll never be asked to do ANYTHING to advance the human race through epic adventures in the wild.

Nature is just not my thing. Or anything cold. Which is strange because I signed up to go abroad at several schools where it snows. I must have been crazy.

This all leads to the fact that I'm a news junkie. I love tid-bits and I check several news sites twice a day just to make sure I know what's going on. So I bookmarked the Mayo Clinic Science Blog a while ago to follow their team of scientists climb Mount Everest in order to study the human body in extreme conditions as well as heart conditions.

from the National Geographic website

Awesome right?

from the Mayo Clinic Science Blog

They're back now but you can still flip through the pictures and see the blog posts about the climb. Safely at home. With the heater turned on. And a bowl of ice-cream.

I have no clue HOW to re-post a Flickr slideshow, but here's the page it's on. It's really cool and I'd hate to have to pay the baggage fee for all those heavy suitcases they had to bring!

Makeup Art

Oh dear, I didn't mean to take such a hiatus. I got overwhelmed with UK Visa stuff. I'd hate to do everything right and then not be able to enter the country. Especially since I told everyone I was going...

This weekend I went to visit my auntie, who got me a wonderful "congratulations" cake. She's an English teacher and when she had the bakery pipe wording on it, she made sure they wrote "Carpe Diem". Isn't that sweet? My Aunt is the best.

Anywho, when I was taking art history classes I managed to avoid the modern/contemporary classes up until the last minute. Because I honestly don't understand them. At. All. When I did take my one contemporary class...I combined it with my art theory class. Two birds, one stone and all that. It was one of the scariest classes I ever had...because it was just not my cup of tea. And I didn't get most of the art.

I can take you on a tour of the Louvre, the Met, the High (in Atlanta), or the Getty but if we go to the MOMA or Tate Modern...I'll probably be more confused than you.

So recall all that, when I tell you that this contemporary (make-up) art is ridiculously awesome.

The makeup artist is named Ayami Nishimura, and the photographer is named Rankin, who's based in LA.

That's cool right? Especially when you consider that I can barely manage not to poke myself in the eye with the mascara wand.

I'm dying.

My makeup is melting.

My A/C bill is going to be horrible.

I can't believe we had a hurricane a week ago (flooding) and now a heat wave. I'm waiting for the plague of frogs.

Seriously Florida...cool down!

But, Happy 4th of July rest of the world, and Happy Independence Day USA!
