School in the UK is seriously kicking my butt. It's not that I'm dying over the difficulty, it's that the whole structure is so vastly different!

By the time I've gotten caught up and I'm understanding what's going on...new class! Totally dying!

But I'll update soon! Promise!Merryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03630916096537368217noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-628907808827923559.post-9540028212806469292012-09-11T12:50:00.000-04:002012-09-11T12:50:31.502-04:00What the World Trade Center in NYC look like nowI've been in Scotland for about five days now. I kinda have my bearings...in the sense that I can get to the university and the grocery store.

Baby Steps!

But because I'm not in America anymore I kinda missed out on all the 9/11 tributes that are happening. Reading updates from Facebook has made me sad because everyone is telling where they were when they found out.

But it made me wonder how the progress on the rebuilding of the World Trade Center in NYC was coming along and what it will eventually look like.

Supposedly, it's going to have tons of space for offices and performing arts..and a mega mall.

Sorry for the ridiculous amount of pictures...I just can't help myself really.

The building known as "One World Trade Center" (or 1WTC) is going to be the tallest building in NYC when it's done and the third tallest in the world, which is pretty spiffy. Plus...the height is supposed to be 1,776 feet high (1776 = the year of American Independence). I love nerdy stuff like that!
These are all World War II pictures, that I hadn't seen. And although it's war, they aren't horrifically graphic (besides the destruction that's occurring) but there is some bombing, and bombed out images. If that makes sense.
Very, very slowly. But, since one of the products I ordered off of Amazon came in, I decided to start packing the lotions, shampoo, moisturizer part of my luggage. The bigger containers went into one of my suitcases that will be checked, but for the carry on bag, I had to raid my stash of hotel and beauty counter supplies.

Yes...I have a stash. And I'm not ashamed, when I travel anywhere, that's what I end up packing from. It's just easier, and cheaper, than running out to Walmart or Target and raiding their $1 section for the mini-sized products.

And tonight, I suppose I'll start packing some of my measly number of clothes that will translate over to the weather in Scotland. There's about a 25 degree (Fahrenheit) difference in temperature at the moment.

Or, put another way...that has made everyone but me laugh. The average summer temperature over there is about the average winter temperature here (if it's a cloudy and rainy day).
I've bought a huge coat. And gloves. And glove warmers. And a snuggie. Neil Armstrong, who was the first man on the moon, passed away this past week. My grandmommy told me how exciting the whole Apollo 11 mission was and how she watched every minute that showed on TV. I think the wonder of all that is something that I take for granted (because since I've been born, the human race has always been able to go to the moon).
Which freaks me out massively. When I told my cousin, he sent me this video of a comic named Michael Macintyre. He drops some f-bombs, so there's your warning right there. But I laughed so hard, I cried. The man is a total hoot!

So hopefully this visa will come in before school starts (eek! I'm really freaked out) so I went ahead and got myself a new laptop/net book/computer thingy

It's pretty! and really tiny. Go me for not picking out a crap-tastic laptop!

I'm also looking for a coat, because I get cold when the temperature gets below 70 degrees (fahrenheit), which it apparently does across the pond. So, appropriate coats are necessary. Warm coats, with insulation. That make me look like a fluffy penguin. Yay (ugh).

Of course, I fell in love with this coat...impractical as it may be.
So instead of doing more research into UK weather and life and whatever else I should be learning, I've decided to walk the path of denial and spend countless hours on youtube looking at the best way to curl my hair a la vicky's secret.
I can deal with the advice on the Total Beauty website (Hair Secrets of the Victoria's Secret Models), because when I kinda feel like actually doing my hair, I do it like that. Hairspray + curling iron + more hairspray.
Although, I don't pin my hair free style like that, I cheat and use velcro rollers.
I've been trying to pack my life into a suitcase...and find actual winter clothes.

It's just that I keep getting distracted, by things I don't need.

And I had to buy a laptop/netbook computer thing for class. I have learned that my personal preference when picking out electronics is: "is it pretty?". The sales men love me.

Since, I'm still packing (I mean, how many jeans do I need anyways?), I'll just post a photo of a Danish police officer being fun.
Can we even talk about the fact that they (as in the Danish police) have a facebook page!
I'm totally jealous as I'm far too lazy to attempt some of these intricate designs. Although I could probably get the red, white or blue thing going.

The Guardian Newspaper has a Pinterest board dedicated to Olympic athletes patriotic nail art, plus some additional patriotic/Olympic nail art. (Link: Olympic Nail Art)

Inspirationail has a Pinterest board dedicated to the 2012 Olympic Games-Nails as well (Link: Olympic Nails)

The post is ridiculously picture heavy. And mostly American athletes because that's where I'm from but there are other countries in the links, promise! I kinda went overboard with the pics and the links to even MORE pictures. Sorry!
Sort of. If you can wait up for it. And not yell at the inane questions they ask the Olympians. I mean seriously, "How does it feel to win a gold medal?" What are they going to say "Oh, absolutely awful, won't do it again. Can't stand it, darling". Ugh!

There's all sorts of rules about the Olympics, logos, and anything that could link to them. Like, you can't sell Olympic themed merchandise without permission. They're HEAVILY trademarked. Strange but it makes perfect sense.

The Olympic Rings, the five interlocking rings, have a fun back story which I didn't know before I was browsing the internet to avoid thinking about buying a coat (because it's going to cold this winter!). I'm damn good at procrastination.

Olympic Rings via Wikipedia

There are five colors and then the white background that represents all the colors of the countries that competed in the Olympics in 1912. The design was created by Pierre de Coubertin, who also is the founder of the International Olympic Committee and in theory the founder of the modern Olympic games, and the owner of a spectacular mustache.

Pierre de Coubertin, via Wikipedia

Isn't that fun to know. Don't you wish the NBC people talked about stuff like that? Or maybe they do. But I'm asleep by the time that happens.

Paralympic Symbol via Wikipedia

The Paralympics are also happening this summer and this is their flag/symbol. Which is new, from 2003. It's about unity and motion and the colors are the most common flag colors in the world.

Lab 42 made this infographic based on a poll they did from 500 social media users. I only feel bad for not picking up on what an Olympiad was, but I knew everything else question wise. Go me!
Or anything out-doorsy.

It's torture.

Which is probably why I'll never be asked to do ANYTHING to advance the human race through epic adventures in the wild.

Nature is just not my thing. Or anything cold. Which is strange because I signed up to go abroad at several schools where it snows. I must have been crazy.

This all leads to the fact that I'm a news junkie. I love tid-bits and I check several news sites twice a day just to make sure I know what's going on. So I bookmarked the Mayo Clinic Science Blog a while ago to follow their team of scientists climb Mount Everest in order to study the human body in extreme conditions as well as heart conditions.
They're back now but you can still flip through the pictures and see the blog posts about the climb. Safely at home. With the heater turned on. And a bowl of ice-cream.

I have no clue HOW to re-post a Flickr slideshow, but here's the page it's on. It's really cool and I'd hate to have to pay the baggage fee for all those heavy suitcases they had to bring!
I got overwhelmed with UK Visa stuff. I'd hate to do everything right and then not be able to enter the country. Especially since I told everyone I was going...

This weekend I went to visit my auntie, who got me a wonderful "congratulations" cake. She's an English teacher and when she had the bakery pipe wording on it, she made sure they wrote "Carpe Diem". Isn't that sweet? My Aunt is the best.

Anywho, when I was taking art history classes I managed to avoid the modern/contemporary classes up until the last minute. Because I honestly don't understand them. At. All. When I did take my one contemporary class...I combined it with my art theory class. Two birds, one stone and all that. It was one of the scariest classes I ever had...because it was just not my cup of tea. And I didn't get most of the art.

I can take you on a tour of the Louvre, the Met, the High (in Atlanta), or the Getty but if we go to the MOMA or Tate Modern...I'll probably be more confused than you.

So recall all that, when I tell you that this contemporary (make-up) art is ridiculously awesome.
But if you're a reporter (and by that, I mean a real one (intern power!), not one who gets wardrobe and sits on their butt to read off a prompter) you still have to have your running shoes on. No, I mean, literally. You need to wear running shoes.

These pictures are great--they show reporters running to get extra news/info to their stations after the Supreme Court ruled on "ObamaCare".

NPR has a great summary of who "won" and who "lost". As in, whose reporter can run the fastest with the correct news (sorry CNN and FOX and congratulations Bloomberg, who won the News Olympics with 24 seconds over the Associated Press).

At least two of the runners were ID'ed as interns from CBS evening news and ABS news.

if I make it to the gym tomorrow, I should probably reward myself with a cookie. I real one too, not one of those imaginary ones that my doctor thinks I should eat.

Carrie Underwood is, of course, a star. So part of her job is looking amazing. And she has wonderful legs to show off.

And she doesn't eat fast food. Or meat.

Sometimes a girl just needs some chicken nuggets. And if I miss the elliptical the next day...well, I'll just have to suffer the shame.

Anyways, this article, is all about her exercise routine. They even have names for some of these exercises. I've never heard of most of them, and the rest I avoid by sheer will power. For instance, "Squat Jacks"...doesn't that make you want to go cry in a corner? It should.
They're always so interesting! What's also really interesting to me, is while we have "old" houses, bridges, buildings and other structures in America---it's not really as old as some places in Europe or Asia. "Old" kinda becomes relative then.

Tower Bridge and Tower of London on March 1921

So, if you want to look at pictures of England (Britain...I'm not really sure the name thing, I've never figured that out) that were taken between 1919 to 1953, there's a website called "Britain from Above" that has about 95,000 images.

England's Houses of Parliament on June 1926

This is the cool thing (ok, to nerds like me, it's super cool). The company that took all these pictures is called Aerofilms Ltd, which was the first commercial aerial photography company in Britain (founded in 1919). They own about 1.2 million negatives/photographs. But I think only the 95,000 from the website have been digitized. Which is still a lot. But you can see the changes of the English/British landscape during those forty years (which includes World Wars and industrialization). It's pretty amazing.

The Crystal Palace was created for the World Fair, and was really one of the first "modern" buildings. All steel and glass. As a random aside. I thought it was awesome (picture wise!).
They have the pictures tagged by locations and I went through to see if there were any I recognized by place but I only saw a few. Mostly because I only went to England once so nothing really hit me beyond the touristy places.
I don't know why really, but between how expensive it is, and then trying to convince my debt strapped friends to go with me it's next to impossible some times.

But even if I have to sit by myself, with a bunch of kids (ok...that sounds creepy), I'm going to see this movie.

Because I'm going to Scotland for University. And even though this film is animated...it's Scotland.

I can get down with some fascinators, I can even deal with some of the more "creative" things I've seen at British weddings. I'm a bit worried when I can't tell if your hat is legit, or if it's a manic bird attacking your head. There's a problem if I might need to shoot your hat. That's all I'm saying.

(I still secretly love all the ladies who wear the crazy hats...it takes some fashion cojones to do it, so mad props...even if I have an urge to shoot your hat).

There were some new "fashion" rules at Ascot. I don't know what they were. It didn't seem to stop the hats at least.
It's a bit rainy today (see the image above? That's the rain map from today!). Enough water that I wore rain boots (I normally can't even be bothered). Pure laziness of finding where I put them...not because I have an aversion to them.

Since it's one of those super nasty days, it's going to movie and book night in front of fire...even those it's the middle of summer. With ice cream. It made sense in my head.

Cool news of the day? Presidential Portraits. Former president, George W. Bush's portrait has been revealed and Time.com has a slide show of some of the other portraits. I think some presidential portraits are more well known than others, and some I'm fairly sure I've never seen. It's a pretty cool go through.

Apparently it takes a bit to get the portrait done, who knew? I mean...it (as in GW Bush) was done in 2012 if I'm reading that right...
Fun fact...my family has been in America for a freaking loooong time. And we're related to a couple of presidents, and off the top of my head, two of the guys above are in some way cousins for sure, and there's some possible connection to two more above. Pretty cool huh? Or...I've got some well-marrying relatives, hmm.

The video is linked in here, and I SO suggest you watch it. The pictures don't even come close!

It's a 5 Million Dollar--let me repeat that--FIVE MILLION DOLLARS, two story closet. It's in the Texas (Dallas) mansion, named Champ d'Or, and the closet belongs to Shirley Goldfield. She was inspired by Chanel, with 18K gold doorknobs, a custom made $30,000 chandelier and a $10,000 rug.

And if you have 35 million to spare, Champ d'Or is for sale. It's 120 acres, and the house is 35,000 square feet. It's based off Vaux-le-Vicomte. And if you do have 35 million to spare...we need to be friends. stat! The Daily Mail says the price is now 10.3 Million. I still want to be friends with you even for 10 million!

But ready for the nasty little part of this story...this house has "allegedly" never been lived in. SERIOUSLY? I'd move into the closet alone and be happy.
Merryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03630916096537368217noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-628907808827923559.post-86112230344147362742012-06-20T10:30:00.000-04:002012-06-20T10:30:00.527-04:00Grad School WardrobeI've been in a panic.

Not because I'm moving

Or because I'm going to be paying for school, while living abroad, on a part-time salary.

Or even because I know absolutely NO one where I'm going.

Nope. It's because I have no cold weather clothes and have no idea how to pack up my closet.

Yup. My priorities are in the right place (my closet).

Since I'm from the south, I'm used to muggy weather and lots of Lilly.

Lilly Eryn dress

I don't even own a heavy coat...and snow is not something that happens. Do you know what happens in the UK? It snows! It gets cold! Goodness!

So, in my blind panic, I've been trying to find the essentials to my wardrobe. I had a basic list until I realized that it was more... "American" style wardrobe...and still southern. (10+ dresses? Why, of course!).

Plus, in theory, a graduate school wardrobe should be slightly more professional (in the business sector at least) than an undergraduate. So I suppose my sparkly heels will have to stay behind. Boo.

So I googled British packing list and somehow got on THIS site...which talks about the difference between British and American style, plus guides for all sorts of regions around the world. Things I've learned...I have NO idea what a "festival" look is, but if it's anything like coachella fashions...I'll pass (on that style).

They have a master archival section about wardrobe + packing for studying abroad, as well as specific sections, thank the lord.

I'm going to have to learn to layer. And find a coat. Like, a real heavy duty coat. And sensible shoes. 6-inch heels while walking around the city is not happening.

I'm thinking of bringing the basics and buying the coat over there. That makes sense right? And cold weather stuff over there too. Because I'd have to order that anyways.
